Teeth may need to be removed if you have persistent tooth problems, lack of space, or infections, most commonly with wisdom teeth. If a tooth is partially below the gum, inflammation can occur in the area, making it more susceptible to infection. This is often due to inadequate brushing around the tooth, allowing bacteria to settle in the surrounding gums. When bacteria linger for an extended period, inflammation and pain can result. It is not advisable to leave an infection in your mouth over time.
If the tooth has a complicated root anatomy or other conditions that warrant it, you may be referred to a specialist for surgical extraction.
