A dental filling is a white composite (plastic) material that replaces lost tooth structure due to cavities (caries), worn teeth, or a broken tooth. When cavities are present, the size of the filling will vary depending on the extent of the cavity or damage to the tooth. The treatment time will also differ based on the size of the filling. It is only after a diagnosis that we can determine whether you need a 1, 2, or 3-surface filling. You will receive thorough information during an examination, and the size of the filling will be included in your cost estimate.
For the restoration of an entire tooth, there is generally a need for a 4-surface filling out of a total of 5 surfaces on the tooth. If a large part of the tooth has broken, it may sometimes be more appropriate to place a crown on the tooth to preserve it, as a filling may not provide sufficient support to hold the tooth together.
