Issues related to the jaw and masticatory muscles are relatively common. This can involve pain that often leads to headaches, locking of the jaw, clicking sounds, and difficulties in opening and closing the mouth normally. The causes of such issues are often complex, with stress frequently acting as a triggering and exacerbating factor. Other causes may include teeth grinding, jaw clenching, or tongue pressing. The dentist will investigate these causes and examine whether there are other underlying factors contributing to the problems.
Treatment for issues with the masticatory muscles and jaw joints includes information, pain relief, relaxation exercises, and potentially a bite splint. The bite splint will help relax the muscles, thereby reducing related discomfort. It can also serve as protection against tooth wear if that is a concern.

An OPG is a panoramic X-ray that gives us a complete view of your teeth, roots, and jaw. We often use OPGs to determine if wisdom teeth need to be removed. The X-ray shows the tooth's position and helps us assess any potential risks. OPGs are also useful for diagnosing jaw problems and planning treatment with aligners or invisible braces.
Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste before putting on the guard. Even if you don’t wear the guard while eating, bacteria and saliva can still cling to it. When you remove the guard, it should be brushed with cold or lukewarm water and soap or toothpaste. The guard can also be cleaned periodically with a mixture of vinegar and water.
