Root canal treatment preserves the tooth if a cavity reaches the tooth's nerves.

If the tooth's nerve is dead, irritated, or infected, a root canal is needed to preserve the tooth. This can be caused by cavities, deep fillings, or previous crown work. Without treatment, bacteria inside the tooth can spread to the root tip, leading to inflammation in the jawbone. This inflammation may become visible as a "pimple" (fistula) on the gum. While this condition can be painful, it often has no symptoms and is detected during annual dental check-ups.
The root canals are cleaned to ensure all infection is removed. After this, filling material is used to replace the cleaned tissue, which is known as a root filling. Treatment may occur in one visit but can sometimes require multiple appointments. Once the root filling is complete, a temporary filling is placed on top of the tooth to protect it from bacteria. The tooth must then be restored to its natural shape with either composite filling or a porcelain crown.
